Volos is the 5th biggest coastal Greek city with the 3d largest port. It is situated midway on the Greek mainland, about 326 kilometres north and 215 kilometres
south of Thessaloniki (Salonika). With a population of 144,449 (2011), it is an important industrial centre and its port connects Europe, the Middle East and Asia. It was one of five Olympic cities in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Volos has a great climate all year round.The
average temperature is 17 degrees Celcius and the average rainfall about 540 millimetres per
year. Heat waves and intense cold periods are rare.
